====== MBSE Wiki ====== Welcome to the Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) Wiki. This wiki supports the activities of the MBSE Initiative that is sponsored by the International Council on Systems Engineering ( INCOSE) and the %%OMG%% Systems Engineering DSIG ( OMG SE DSIG). Refer to the for a brief summary. The INCOSE SE Vision 2020 ( INCOSE-TP-2004-004-02 September, 2007) defines Model-based systems engineering (MBSE) as "the formalized application of modeling to support system requirements, design, analysis, verification and validation activities beginning in the conceptual design phase and continuing throughout development and later life cycle phases. MBSE is part of a long-term trend toward model-centric approaches adopted by other engineering disciplines, including mechanical, electrical and software. In particular, MBSE is expected to replace the document-centric approach that has been practiced by systems engineers in the past and to influence the future practice of systems engineering by being fully integrated into the definition of systems engineering processes." Applying MBSE is expected to provide significant benefits over the document centric approach by enhancing productivity and quality, reducing risk, and providing improved communications among the system development team. Modeling has always been an important part of systems engineering to support functional, performance, and other types of engineering analysis. Wayne Wymore introduced a mathematical foundation for MBSE in his book entitled Model-Based Systems Engineering in 1993. However, the growth in computing technology and the introduction of modeling standards such as SysML, UPDM, Modelica, HLA, and others, are helping to enable MBSE as a standard practice, and provide a foundation to integrate diverse models needed to fully specify and analyze systems. **Help is available on how to edit and setup new pages for this WIKI on the [**MBSE WIKI Help page**]** ===== Sponsoring Organizations ===== | INCOSE | | OMG Systems Engineering DSIG | ====== MBSE Initiative Overview ====== The MBSE Initiative was initiated at the INCOSE International Workshop in 2007. Its Charter is to "Promote, advance, and institutionalize the practice of MBSE to attain the MBSE 2020 Vision through broad industry and academic involvement in: * Research * Standards * Processes, Practices, & Methods * Tools & Technology * Outreach, Training & Education The MBSE Initiative leadership includes the chair, co-chair, and support for communications as indicated below. | Chair | Mark Sampson | | Co-Chair | Troy Peterson (previously Sandy Friedenthal) | | MBSE Wiki Support | Roger Burkhart | ====== Challenge/Activity Teams ====== Challenge or Activity Teams are created by the MBSE Initiative to launch specialized areas of MBSE-related development activity or work on specific challenge problems. Teams used to be split into either Challenge or Activity Teams, but now either term can be used interchangeably to refer to any subteam hosted by the MBSE Initiative. Challenge/Activity Teams have often helped to incubate new Working Groups. Many groups that started out as MBSE Challenge or Activity Teams have gone on to become chartered as INCOSE Working Groups. Please check the list of Archived Challenge and Activity Teams for links to INCOSE Working Groups launched through this path. Note: these pages are generally open for editing by any participant in the challenge or activity team. See Editing Instructions for information about editing wiki pages. ^Challenge/Activity Team^Challenge/Activity Team Lead^ | Digital Ecosystems (DECO) | Russell Peak | | SysML v1 to SysML v2 Transition Guidance | Frank Salvatore | Archived Challenge and Activity Teams ====== INCOSE Working Groups ====== The complete list of is maintained on the INCOSE website. Each Working Group within INCOSE Technical Operations is responsible for maintaining its charter and web pages on the INCOSE website. Some of these groups, however, began as challenge or activity teams on this MBSE wiki, or find it useful to maintain wiki pages here in addition to their resources on the INCOSE website.
